Abstract Microichthys grandis n. sp. from off southwest Ireland, northeastern Atlantic Ocean, is described on the basis of a single specimen and compared with other species genus. The new characterized by following combination characters: dorsal-fin rays VII–I, vii, 1; total pectoral-fin 18; gill rakers 25; pyloric caeca 3; pored lateral-line scales 41 + 2; vomerine teeth 6, in row; denticles posterior margin preopercle 3, lower nape not humped; bony rim orbit raised above dorsal profile; ridge present interorbital region; lateral line gradually running towards midline body, crossing last dark bar its centre; oblique bars 20, counter-bars 12; vertical black caudal peduncle present, together another below end second fin; peritoneum silvery; pelvic fin short than head length; fins black.
